Nigeria Aviation Sector Faces Disruption Over Airlines’ Unpaid Ground Handling Fees

Aviation Ground Handlers Association of Nigeria, AGHAN, has threatened to withdrawal its services to airline operators over unpaid debts.

This threat they say, would disrupt flight operations across Nigeria.

To this end AGHAN has issued a final three-day ultimatum to members of the Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, in a letter jointly signed by its Chairman, Mr. Olaniyi Adigun and its Vice Chairman, Mr. Ahmed Bashir citing unpaid debts and a lack of response to earlier demands.

The group says the continued silence from airlines has deepened financial strain on its members despite repeated efforts to reach an amicable resolution.

AGHAN has now set a fresh deadline from May 4 to May 6, 2026, warning that failure to settle outstanding obligations will trigger a full withdrawal of services and possible legal action to recover the debts.

The association notes that the timeline was adjusted in consideration of Workers’ Day, but insists the matter can no longer be delayed.

While maintaining a firm stance, the handlers say they remain open to urgent talks to avert disruptions that could affect passengers and the wider aviation sector.

Key regulators and security agencies, including the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA and the Department of State Services, DSS, have been notified, highlighting the potential economic and safety implications if the dispute escalates.
