Nigeria Summons South African Envoy Over Attacks on Nigerians

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria has summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner over recent protests and reported attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the ministry said the meeting is scheduled for May 4, 2026, to formally convey Nigeria’s concerns over developments that could affect bilateral relations.

The discussions will focus on ongoing demonstrations in parts of South Africa and reported cases of harassment and attacks on Nigerian citizens and their businesses.

The Nigerian government expressed concern that the situation could strain long-standing diplomatic ties between both countries.

While acknowledging growing public anxiety, the ministry urged Nigerians to remain calm as diplomatic engagements continue.It also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad through appropriate diplomatic channels.
