Nigerian Army Urged to Respect Human Rights, Stay Drug-Free

The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Gold Chibuisi, has called on Nigerian Army personnel to uphold human rights, follow the laws of armed conflict, and act professionally.

He gave the charge at a sensitization workshop on human rights and conduct for troops of the 16 Brigade, Nigerian Army, held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Major General Chibuisi reminded soldiers that the South-South region faces major threats like oil theft, cultism, and kidnapping. He stressed the need for strict adherence to rules of engagement during operations.

He said respecting human rights and following security laws builds public trust, especially in crisis-prone areas.

Earlier, Commander of the 16 Brigade, Brigadier General Oluremi Obolo, warned troops to avoid drug abuse and maintain good relations with civilians.

During a lecture, Dr. Chia Francis of the NDLEA said over 14 million Nigerians abuse drugs, based on a UNODC survey. He urged soldiers to stay drug-free for better performance.

Nollywood actor Osita Iheme, a guest speaker, said continued awareness about drug abuse would help military personnel remain focused and professional.

The one-day workshop was attended by senior officers and soldiers from across the 16 Brigade in Bayelsa.
