The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), in collaboration with the British Red Cross Disaster Management team in Lagos, has launched the second phase of its Food Security and Livelihood intervention in Agboyi Community, Agboyi/Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State.
According to a statement from the NRCS Lagos Branch, the initiative follows the success of the first phase in December 2024, during which 180 households each received ₦310,000 to boost their small businesses.
The intervention was aimed at enhancing self-reliance, improving resilience against recurrent flooding, and helping families navigate Nigeria’s current economic challenges.
Building on this impact, the second phase targets 270 households in Agboyi 1, 2, and 3 communities. Activities began with the training of 40 Red Cross volunteers, who have been deployed to register beneficiaries.
All participants will undergo a compulsory two-day financial literacy programme to strengthen their money management and business development skills before receiving support funds via pre-loaded ATM cards.
The NRCS noted that the intervention forms part of a five-year disaster management programme in Agboyi, a community frequently affected by flooding due to its proximity to water bodies and poor drainage infrastructure.
The initiative aims not only to provide immediate relief but also to promote sustainable recovery and long-term livelihood stability.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society, established in 1960 and recognised by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, operates nationwide to deliver emergency assistance, disaster relief and health education.
