Nigerian Navy’s Transformation Impacts Positively On Nations’ Blue Economy – Defence Minister.

The Minister of Defence, Retired General Christopher Musa, says the activities of the Nigerian Navy have impacted positively on the nation’s blue economy which has significantly improved.

As a result, it has secured vital sealanes, protect on/offshore oil and gas assets, combats piracy as well as illegal fishing.

The minister stated this in Lagos at the closing ceremony of the Nigerian Navy 70th anniversary event.

The Nigerian Navy, had displayed astute professionalism at its Ceremonial Sunset parade and award night in Lagos.

The Ceremonial Sunset, is a timeless tradition common across navies globally and remains one of the most solemn and significant rituals around the world for the navies.

Gen Musa commended the Nigerian Navy’s performance as not only a professional, but an example of organisational prowess while appreciating the international partners which reflects the strong bond and sheer commitment to global maritime security.

The Special Guest of Honour, the Minister of Defence, Gen Christopher Musa, was accompanied by the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, other Service Chiefs and the Chief of Defence Staff, who were represented, former Chiefs of Naval Staff, captains of industries, heads of paramilitary organisations, several heads of foreign navies to witness the sunset party, band match off and the lowering of the ensign at sunset.

The event was concluded with a Dinner and Award night at the Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotels.

On the awards and commendation by the CNS to officers and ratings, he stressed that such an award is a powerful tool for inspiration, motivation and moral bolster.

While congratulating the awardees for upholding the highest tradition of service, Gen Musa specially applauded the NN for being consistent over the years prior to his becoming the Minister of Defence recently.

In his welcome address, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas congratulated all the 31 awardees, grouped into seven categories, for their exemplary conduct, astatue and sterling professionalism that elevated the NN from a humble beginning with a few coastal patrol boats and strength of 250 personnel, to a formidable fleet comprising over 152 naval vessels of different types and classes.

Earlier, the Chief of Policy and Plans, Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral A. I Olodude said the awards was a testament of the officers and ratings who have distinguished themselves through gallantry, innovation and selfless service.

Among the recipients of the awards were Commodore MM Braimah; Cdre AO Odejobi and Cdre Toju Vincent, who had their Long Flying Medal (Pilots) award handed to them by a former CNS, Vice Admirals Awuul Zubairu Gambo and Jibrilla Ayinla.

Others included Cdre ER Ekuma; Captain CO Obute and Seaman Fireman Alhassan, a dedicated sailor, who fought Boko Haram terrorists under operation HADIN KAI and UDOKA II and sustained severe injuries in active service.

Also, Widows of some fallen heros were awarded and commended for the gallantry of their husbands, who paid the supreme sacrifice.
