NiMet Forecasts Dust Haze, Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted varying weather conditions across the country, including dust haze in the northern and central regions and thunderstorms in parts of the South between Sunday, January 18 and Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

In its three-day weather outlook issued by NiMet’s Central Forecast Office, the agency said slight dust haze is expected over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa and Kaduna States on Sunday, while other northern states will experience sunny but hazy conditions.

For the central region, including the Federal Capital Territory and Niger State, NiMet forecast moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility of between two and five kilometres, while other states in the region will remain under slight dust haze

According to the outlook, the southern region will generally experience sunny skies with patches of cloud, alongside chances of afternoon or evening thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall over parts of Oyo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States on Sunday.

NiMet noted that similar weather patterns are expected on Monday, January 19, with sunny and hazy conditions dominating the northern and central regions, while thunderstorms with light rains are likely in several southern states including Ogun, Edo and Lagos.

By Tuesday, January 20, the agency said hazy conditions will persist in the northern and central parts of the country, while the South will continue to witness sunny intervals and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening hours.

NiMet advised the public to take necessary precautions as dust particles remain in suspension, particularly people with asthma and other respiratory conditions.

The agency also urged motorists to drive with caution during rainfall and advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective flight planning .
