The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds and rising temperatures across parts of the country between Friday, February 6 and Sunday, February 8, 2026.
According to NiMet’s Impact-Based Weather Forecast issued on Thursday, February 5, light to moderate rainfall is expected on Friday over parts of Cross River, Ondo and Ekiti states, while most other parts of the country will experience low rainfall with little or no hydro-meteorological risk.
The agency noted that similar weather conditions will persist on Saturday, with rainfall likely over parts of Cross River, Ogun, Akwa Ibom, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti states.
By Sunday, rainfall is expected mainly across the coastal belt, including Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states
NiMet warned that areas experiencing rainfall could witness flash flooding, soil erosion, strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning, which may lead to isolated cases of displacement, damage to weak structures and outbreaks of water-borne diseases.
Beyond rainfall, the agency also forecast high temperatures across large parts of the country during the period.
NiMet stated that maximum temperatures in the top 10 percent range are expected in several locations, increasing the risk of heat stress, heat-related illnesses and damage to temperature-sensitive goods .
In addition, moderate risks of strong winds are expected over parts of Borno and Benue states between Friday and Sunday.
The strong winds could cause damage to weak structures, falling trees and disruption of vehicular movement in affected areas.
NiMet advised residents to take precautionary measures, avoid flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall, stay hydrated during periods of high temperature, and follow updates from weather and emergency management authorities.
