A planned strike by unions at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has been postponed indefinitely.
Representatives from the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC), and Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) announced the decision today in Abuja following successful negotiations with NiMet management.
The unions had initially scheduled the strike for Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
However, after extensive discussions, both parties reached an agreement addressing the unions’ concerns.
The unions emphasized that their primary focus throughout the negotiations was the welfare of NiMet workers.
Timelines for addressing the various issues raised have been established and agreed upon by both sides.
NiMet Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, stated that management is committed to the welfare of its employees but must operate within existing economic realities.
He expressed satisfaction that the unions agreed to postpone the strike, allowing management to continue pursuing necessary government approvals for the outstanding issues.
President of NUATE and lead negotiator for the unions, Comrade Benjamin Nnabue, explained that strikes are a last resort.
He emphasized the unions’ commitment to the overall welfare of NiMet staff.
Director of Labour in the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Olusoga Adebayo who oversaw the discussions, commended both parties for their spirit of compromise and their use of social dialogue to reach a resolution.
A joint agreement signed by the unions and NiMet management acknowledged that miscommunication had contributed to the issues and pledged to improve communication channels.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to a progressive partnership that prioritizes industrial peace and staff welfare.
The unions, in a show of good faith, agreed to postpone the strike pending further developments.
