The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has applauded the ongoing transformation within the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), describing recent developments as a strong indicator of progress in Nigeria’s transport sector.
The commendation followed the experience of NIPR members who traveled aboard a Kaduna-bound train from Abuja en route to the Institute’s Annual General Meeting held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre.
The journey, which brought together members from various state chapters, became more than just a means of transportation.
The fully booked train provided a platform for networking, collaboration, and professional reconnection among public relations practitioners from across the country.
Delegates, particularly from southern states, converged in Abuja before boarding the train alongside their counterparts from the Federal Capital Territory.
The experience was widely described as efficient, engaging, and reflective of improvements in rail services.
Passengers commended the professionalism of NRC staff and the quality of service delivery, noting that the transformation under the leadership of Kayode Opeifa demonstrates the potential of the railway system when properly managed.
Many members emphasized that Nigerians are willing to support and contribute positively when institutions function effectively.
They also urged the Federal Government to sustain and increase investment in railway infrastructure, highlighting the capital-intensive nature of rail operations and maintenance.
According to them, continued funding would not only improve service delivery but also yield economic returns in the long term, given the growing public trust in rail transportation.
Among the dignitaries on board were the Olumobi of Imobi-Ijesha, Jacob Adetayo Haastrup, President of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, Tony Akiotu, and Mohammed Kudur Abubakar, who currently chairs the planning committee for the World Public Relations Conference scheduled to hold in Abuja.
Other notable attendees included senior NIPR officials and state chapter leaders such as Samuel Ayetutu and representatives from Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Bayelsa, and Enugu states.
Oba Haastrup praised Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Opeifa as Managing Director of the NRC, noting that his leadership has, within a short period, demonstrated the corporation’s capacity to drive economic development.
Speaking on behalf of the Lagos chapter, Dr. Ayetutu explained that the decision to travel by rail was also influenced by security concerns associated with road travel, as well as a deliberate effort to support the improvements within the NRC.
He called on the Federal Government to expand rail connectivity across other parts of the country, positioning it as a reliable alternative mode of transportation.
The NRC delegation to the conference was led by Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, alongside Yinka Aderibigbe.
The NIPR Annual General Meeting, which continues in Kaduna, is expected to address emerging trends and innovations in public relations practice.
The event will also serve as a precursor to the World Public Relations Conference scheduled to take place in Nigeria later in the year, where global professionals will convene to discuss the future of the industry amid evolving challenges.
