NLNG has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting innovation and practical scientific learning among young Nigerians with the successful conclusion of the 2026 Science Contest in Rivers State.
The competition, held in Port Harcourt, brought together secondary school students to showcase their knowledge and problem-solving abilities in key science subjects.
Speaking at the grand finale, NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Sophia Horsfall, described the contest as a platform for nurturing academic excellence, critical thinking, and innovation.
She said the programme had been redesigned to strengthen students’ foundations in Mathematics, ICT, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology while encouraging the application of science to address real-world challenges.
Horsfall noted that the competition has evolved from a conventional science quiz into a broader science contest aimed at producing solution-driven young people capable of shaping Nigeria’s technological future.
According to her, NLNG is focused on empowering problem-solvers rather than merely rewarding academic performance.
At the end of the keenly contested event, Government Comprehensive Secondary School (GCSS), Borokiri, Port Harcourt, emerged overall winner with 57,189 points. Niger Delta Science School (NDSS) secured second place with 49,135 points, while Enitonia High School, Port Harcourt, finished third with 47,686 points.
The competition, organised by NLNG in partnership with the Rivers State Ministry of Education and the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), featured seven secondary schools and covered Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, and a wildcard category.
Other participating schools included Government Secondary School, Eneka; Community Secondary School, Rumumasi; Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Borokiri; and Comprehensive High School, Alesa-Eleme.
