The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has completed the River Niger crossing on the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Gas Pipeline, removing a major technical barrier to the project’s completion.
The development, announced by its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, marks a key milestone for the 130-kilometre pipeline designed to transport up to 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day across the country.
The crossing, executed using Horizontal Directional Drilling technology, extends nearly two kilometres beneath the River Niger, linking eastern gas supply sources to demand centres in the western and northern regions.
NNPC said the project was delivered through collaboration between its internal team and PCE Nig. Limited, overcoming complex environmental and technical challenges in the Niger Delta.
Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the milestone as critical to strengthening Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.
He said the project would improve gas supply reliability, support electricity generation and enhance industrial development by connecting key production and consumption hubs.
The OB3 pipeline is also expected to play a central role in Nigeria’s gas network by boosting domestic utilisation and supporting broader economic growth.
