The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an on-site investigation into the crash-landing of a Diamond training aircraft operated by the Aviation Training School.
In a statement, the Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, the incident occurred on May 23, 2025, at 17:28 local time, during a simulated instrument approach on Runway 05 at General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin.
According to NSIB Director General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., the investigation is focused on determining the cause of the incident, and the Bureau is committed to a thorough and transparent process.
The aircraft’s data card has been recovered and analysis has commenced at NSIB’s transport safety laboratory.
The NSIB team, led by Captain Badeh Jr., visited the crash site on May 24, 2025, to assess the situation and oversee the initial phase of the investigation.
The damaged aircraft is currently positioned on the left side of the runway, and recovery operations are nearly complete.
Both occupants of the aircraft are reported to be conscious and coherent, and are receiving appropriate medical care.
Captain Badeh Jr. assured the public that the country’s airspace remains safe, and the NSIB will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
A preliminary report is expected to be released within 30 days, and the Bureau’s findings will inform safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
The NSIB’s investigation is focused on determining what happened, to whom it happened, how it happened, and most importantly, how to prevent it from happening again.
