As the raining season sets in this year, National Youths Corps members serving in Lagos State have been advised to keep safe and stay healthy at this period as the weather forecast report has identified Lagos as one of the states to experience heavy flooding this year.
The Lagos State Coordinator, National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, Mrs. Yetunde Baderinwa gave the advice at the Swearing-in of Batch “A” Stream two Corps members posted to Lagos State.
The event was held at the NYSC temporary orientation camp in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.
She explained that with the heavy wind and flooding already being reported in some parts of the state as the rains set in, it is important for everyone living in Lagos state, Youths Corps members inclusive to keep safe in the face of the natural weather condition.
The NYSC boss in Lagos state said that while Corps members in particular, were advised to ensure that they moved away from heavy flood areas when need be to avoid being casualties, they should also ensure that they keep warm whenever the weather gets extremely cold.
Mrs. Baderinwa however, advised Corps members to support the government in keeping their environments clean by disposing of their solid wastes in appropriate places.
She stressed that disposing of solid wastes like plastic bottles and other insoluble materials around the environment usually leads to blockage of drains which would in turn result in flooding.
While appreciating the Lagos state government for supporting the NYSC scheme over the years, Mrs. Baderinwa appealed to the state government to.expedite action on the construction of a permanent orientation camp for the scheme in the state.
She said that the facilities at the temporary orientation camp had continued to be overstretched as the number of Corps members being posted to Lagos kept increasing every year.
She however, advised the new Corps members being posted to the state to contribute meaningfully to the development of communities where they would be posted to for primary assignment after the orientation course.
In a message to the event, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu assured the Corps members that the government had put necessary machinery in place to ensure their safety.
Justice Babatunde Kalaro later administered the Oath of allegiance on the Corps members on behalf of the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba.
Out of the total number of Four Thousand, Four Hundred and Forty Corps members posted to Lagos State for the Batch “A” Stream two service year, some are dislodged to Ogun and Osun states to undergo their orientation course due to limited space at the Lagos State NYSC temporary orientation camp.
