Obasa Applauds First Lady’s Lagos Visit, Vows Push for Girl-Child Leadership Training

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has hailed the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Lagos, describing it as a symbolic homecoming that reaffirms her deep bond with the state.

Obasa spoke during the First Lady’s engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and political stakeholders, noting that her presence rekindled pride and unity among Lagosians.

“It’s very good to have her back in Lagos. She’s always been our mother first as the First Lady of Lagos State and now as the First Lady of the Federation. Her visit, announced and well-organised, sends a clear message to all Lagosians that she remains committed to the state’s progress,” Obasa said.

He praised Senator Tinubu’s focus on grassroots development, particularly her interventions in food security, poverty alleviation, and consultations with traditional institutions, describing these as consistent with constitutional duties and community needs.

On the issue of the girl child, the Speaker reaffirmed Lagos State’s strong record, pointing to laws already in place against rape, abuse, and child exploitation within schools.

However, he stressed that legislation must be complemented by deliberate leadership grooming, endorsing a fresh proposal that emerged from the First Lady’s visit — the creation of a dedicated institution to raise future female leaders.

“One key issue raised was leadership training for the girl child. I agree completely. Beyond laws, we need to intentionally raise the consciousness of our girls towards leadership and future responsibilities. It’s an idea we’ll take seriously and explore where necessary,” Obasa affirmed.
