Obasanjo: Nigeria Should Not Hesitate to Seek Foreign Support Against Terror Groups

‎Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again raised alarm over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, urging the Federal Government to be mindful of the calls to negotiate with terrorists, but rather deploy modern technology, alongside international assistance where necessary to protect citizens.

‎Obasanjo made the remarks at the Plateau Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos, where he expressed deep concern that killings, abductions, and violent attacks have continued unabated across the country.

‎The former president said no nation should feel ashamed to seek global support when its internal capacity appears insufficient, insisting that saving Nigerian lives must remain paramount.

‎He warned that insecurity now cuts across religious, ethnic, and political lines, noting that communities in the North-West, North-Central, and other parts of the country have suffered repeated assaults from bandits, terrorists, and armed groups.

‎His comments follow a series of high-profile attacks, including the abduction of over 300 students and teachers in Niger State, the kidnap of schoolgirls in Kebbi, the seizure of farmers in Shiroro, and fresh raids in Kano and Kwara.

These incidents have renewed public outrage and heightened calls for stronger security coordination.

‎According to Obasanjo, Nigeria already has the technological capacity to identify and track criminals, and with modern tools such as drones, Nigeria should be able to neutralise them without resorting to negotiations.

“Nigerians are being killed every day. If our government cannot protect us, we have every right to call on the international community to do for us what our government cannot do. With today’s technology, no criminal should be able to hide. So why are we apologising? Why are we negotiating?” Obasanjo said

‎The former President remarks echo growing frustration among citizens who have witnessed persistent attacks in Kaduna, Plateau, Zamfara, Niger, and even parts of the FCT despite ongoing military operations.

‎Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, also addressed the gathering, expressing optimism that Nigeria will overcome its current challenges.

He said unity remains vital in confronting forces working to destabilise communities.

‎The governor noted that the annual carol was introduced to strengthen harmony among Plateau’s diverse population and commended the turnout of dignitaries, religious leaders, and worshippers

‎The event featured performances by prominent gospel artistes and choirs from various denominations, reinforcing the message of unity and resilience in the face of national insecurity.
