An oil tanker laden with Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) was gutted by fire late Tuesday night along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, inward Agege.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident, stating that no life was lost.
However, a male dispatch rider sustained injuries.According to LASEMA, distress calls were received through its 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines at about 11:30 p.m., prompting immediate activation of the state’s Emergency Response Plans from the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.
The Lagos Response Team (LRT) arrived at the scene around 11:50 p.m., where it was discovered that the fully loaded tanker had been engulfed in flames.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while in motion, causing it to overturn sideways.
The resulting spillage of its contents ignited, leading to the fire outbreak.Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the swift intervention of LASEMA and other emergency responders successfully contained and extinguished the fire.
Necessary precautionary measures were also implemented to prevent further damage to surrounding properties and infrastructure.
Authorities assured residents that the situation was brought under control, with response teams ensuring safety within the immediate vicinity of the incident scene.
