Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves credit for stabilising Nigeria’s economy through ongoing reforms.
Speaking to State House correspondents after a courtesy visit to the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala noted that stability is a necessary foundation for economic progress.
According to her, the government’s reforms are moving in the right direction, but the next priority should be accelerating growth and providing support for vulnerable citizens affected by the adjustments.
“We think the President and his team have worked hard to stabilise the economy. You cannot really improve an economy unless it’s stable,” she said. “The next step is to grow the economy and put in place social safety nets so that people feeling the pinch of reforms can get the support they need.”
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala stressed the importance of creating jobs, boosting household incomes, and ensuring that Nigerians have the means to weather current economic challenges.
She said these matters were discussed with President Tinubu during their meeting, but did not disclose further details.
