Old People to Start Getting Grant from Federal Government

Federal Government has approved N2.5 billion as a take-off grant for the National Senior Citizens Centre, NSCC.

The president signed NSCC Act to paved the way for catering for the needs of the elderly through the establishment of community-based prototype systems.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq, announced the development at a one-day Southern Zone Stakeholders Consultation on NSCC Strategic Plans in Lagos.

Hajiya Farouq, represented by the Ag. Director, Social Services, Mr Mansur Kuliya, said the grant was presently processed for disbursement to the centre.

The minister said the centre was collaborating with relevant stakeholders to brainstorm and produce ideas for developing the 10-year strategic plan.

The Director-General, NSCC, Dr Emem Omokaro, said the objective of the consultative forum was to inform stakeholders about the National Senior Citizens Act and the mandate that constitutes the major domains of interventions.

Dr Omokaro said these align with the National Policy on Ageing and the SDGs Agenda 2030, which was the guiding documents for the operations of the National Senior Citizens and the parameters of this stakeholders’ deliberation.

Also, the Lagos State Commissioner of Youth and Social Development, Mr Segun Dawodu, said Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu was committed to reducing the suffering of older citizens in alignment with the theme policy agenda of the state.

Dawodu, represented by Ms Caroline Inegbedion, the ministry’s Deputy Director, Correctional & Elderly Care Services, said plans were underway to construct a Day Care Centre in each of the three senatorial districts in the state adding that the facility was at 85 per cent completion in Epe.

The commissioner noted that the state government had a functional and well funded Old Peoples Home to take care it vulnerable Older People with social workers, nurses, doctors and physiotherapists attached.
