The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has assured traders operating around the Iddo Train Station that no legitimately acquired land or business space will be lost in the ongoing efforts to transform the historic terminus.
Dr. Opeifa gave the assurance during a meeting with leaders of the Iddo Train Terminus Traders, Ijora Olopa/Ajeloro Fish Traders, Ifelodun Traders and Otto Traders.
He said the engagement was necessary to clear fears and provide clarity as the NRC begins a comprehensive facelift of the Iddo station.
While noting that some structures—particularly shanties—may be affected, he expressed concern that many traders had operated for years without valid documentation, with some paying illegal fees to unauthorized persons.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation is determined to transform the Iddo Station. You can already see fresh painting works. Let me assure you: we are bringing back the trains to serve our people,” he said.
He reiterated that no trader with legitimate approval from the NRC would lose their space but lamented reports of people building on railway tracks without authorization.
According to him, the corporation is committed to restoring basic facilities such as electricity and toilets, while also flushing out drug traffickers and criminal elements from NRC property.
A new business unit has been created to prioritize operations at Iddo.
Opeifa also disclosed that rents will not be increased. However, all payments must now be made directly to the Nigerian Railway Property Management Company Ltd. (NRPML) to ensure proper tenant records and improved revenue for market upgrades.
He encouraged traders to continue their activities without fear, saying their compliance with tenancy agreements would enable the NRC improve infrastructure.
“Nigeria’s economy is driven by people like you. Economic activity between Iddo and Apapa alone keeps the nation moving,” he added.
Trader representatives expressed satisfaction with the engagement, describing it as the first time an NRC Managing Director would meet them to discuss their concerns openly.
Alhaji Rashid Bashorun Ajibola, Chairman of the Iddo Railway Terminal Traders, said the meeting erased fears of forced eviction and praised the MD for understanding the traders’ contributions to national food distribution, especially rice supply nationwide.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Ijora Olopa Ajeloro Fish Market, Mr. Aina Adekoya, said Opeifa’s approach reflects his reputation as a people-focused leader since his days as Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos State.
The traders pledged renewed support for the NRC boss, expressing confidence that his plans would boost their businesses and enhance the Iddo trading environment.
