Over One Million Lagosians Connected via Metro Fibre Project as State Pushes Digital Innovation

Over one million residents across Lagos have been connected through the state’s Metro Fibre Project, a key digital infrastructure initiative aimed at delivering 600 kilometres of optic fibre and ducts to boost internet penetration and enhance e-governance services.

Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Tunbosun Alake, disclosed this during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja, to mark the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

Mr. Alake also announced that the Lagos State Innovation Bill is in the pipeline to position the state as a science and technology-driven creative economy.

Through the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC), the government has funded over 70 research initiatives in collaboration with universities, and disbursed over N800 million in grants to support research development and more than 60 startup ventures.

Highlighting digital identity efforts, the Commissioner stated that over six million residents have been registered under the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA), including four million adults and 2.4 million children. The target, he said, is to register ten million residents within the next two years.

To further enhance digital governance, Alake revealed that an Artificial Intelligence-powered chatbot would soon be launched, and Governor Sanwo-Olu will be able to electronically sign files via the Lagos Biz automation platform.

In an ambitious effort to boost youth engagement and reduce unemployment, the Commissioner announced the Digital Leap Programme, which will train 50,000 Lagosians between ages 18 and 35 in deep tech skills, equipping them to become tech problem solvers and active contributors to the state’s innovation economy.

In the year under review, 192 out of 211 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) were evaluated, with 232 application workloads documented in the state’s tech database to improve efficiency and data-driven decision-making.
