The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faces a potentially explosive showdown today as its two warring factions prepare parallel meetings at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
The Mohammed Abdulrahman bloc, backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, is set for an emergency NEC and BoT session, while the Seyi Makinde-backed camp, led by newly elected Chairman Dr Kabiru Turaki, insists on holding its inaugural NWC meeting at the same venue.
Tension escalated after Turaki emerged from Saturday’s controversial Ibadan convention, prompting former Kaduna State governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, to resign fully as Secretary of the Board of Trustees.
Makarfi said it was improper for the National Chairman and BoT Secretary to come from the same geopolitical zone, reaffirming a decision he had deferred until after the convention at Wabara’s request.
Fearing a confrontation, Turaki visited the FCT Commissioner of Police yesterday to request security protection for himself and his NWC.
He described a counter-meeting notice issued by National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu as a “deliberate attempt to cause confusion,” insisting that those challenging his leadership—including Wike, Anyanwu, and Ayo Fayose—were expelled at the Ibadan convention.
The Wike-aligned faction, however, is pushing back hard, activating emergency meetings expected to recommend sanctions against senior members of the Makinde–Turaki bloc.
Party sources say Governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Makinde himself are among those listed for possible disciplinary action as both sides dig in on questions of legitimacy and control.
With both blocs now claiming authority over Wadata Plaza and mobilising their supporters, fears of a possible security breach have intensified.
Turaki says his team is ready to “lay down our lives” to defend the party, while the Wike camp frames its response as a fight against unlawful expulsions—setting the stage for one of the PDP’s most destabilising battles yet.
