Poor wages induce unethical journalism- Akinola

Regular and stable renumeration by media organisations is key to sustaining the credibility of the fourth estate of the realm.

Public analyst and a Senior Staff at the University of Lagos, Mr. Afolabi Akinola stated this in a chat with Newsreel in Lagos.

Mr. Akinola who decried the low and irregular payment of salaries by some media houses called for regulations that would address the issues of inadequate welfare, including Insurance policy for journalists.

He said “It is unfortunate that we are on this kind of situation, how many media organisations pay well, or paying their staff regularly”

“The credibility of information is key when renumeration has been satisfied. So we have to address this in Nigeria” He stated

Mr. Akinola added that such measures will help downplay the excesses of some unprofessional newsmen, as well as maintain the standards laid by forerunners in the profession.

The public analyst also appealed to veterans in the industry to uphold the corporate regard of the profession by closely mentoring the younger ones.
