POWA Launches Welfare Initiative for Police Families in Lagos

The President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Olufunmilola Disu, has officially launched the Lagos phase of the POWA CARES Initiative, a nationwide welfare programme focused on improving the living conditions of families within the Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking at the launch event in Lagos on April 28, 2026, Disu described the initiative as a strategic and sustainable intervention aimed at strengthening support systems for police households across the country.

She emphasized that the operational effectiveness of any police institution is directly linked to the welfare and stability of its personnel and their families.

Building on the success of its first phase in Abuja, where over 1,000 beneficiaries received medical services, the Lagos rollout is designed to broaden both reach and impact.

According to Disu, more than 1,000 beneficiaries will benefit from free healthcare services during the two-day programme, including eye screenings, treatments, corrective eyewear, dental care, and general medical consultations.

Beyond healthcare, the initiative also introduces targeted socio-economic support.

This includes nursing scholarships, financial grants for 200 families, and the distribution of Cowry transport cards to ease daily commuting costs.

The programme further integrates youth-focused sensitisation campaigns addressing critical social issues such as drug abuse, cultism, and sexual and reproductive health, an effort aimed at protecting and empowering the next generation.

Disu noted that POWA CARES represents a shift from short-term welfare interventions to a more structured and sustainable social protection model.

The initiative is powered through collaborations with government agencies, healthcare providers, and development partners.

She acknowledged the support of the Lagos State Government, led by Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, as well as medical professionals and partner organisations contributing to the programme’s success.

Encouraging beneficiaries to fully utilise the opportunity, Disu stressed that investing in the well-being of police families ultimately strengthens national security institutions.

She formally declared the Lagos phase of the POWA CARES Initiative open, reaffirming the association’s commitment to building resilient, empowered police families across Nigeria.
