Prepare for Floods, Storms  – NiMet Advises Nigerians

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide weather alert warning of widespread thunderstorms, moderate to heavy rainfall, and potential flash floods from Monday to Wednesday.

‎In its latest forecast released in Abuja, NiMet said many parts of the country will experience unstable weather conditions, with varying intensities of rain expected across the northern, central, and southern regions.

States in the North including Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, Katsina, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba have been placed on alert for moderate rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours.

‎Flash floods are likely in vulnerable areas such as Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano, with NiMet calling on local authorities and residents to activate emergency response mechanisms.

‎The central region, including Niger, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Benue, is also expected to experience light to moderate rainfall throughout the forecast period, with cloudy skies during the mornings followed by heavier rains in the afternoon and evening.

‎In the southern parts of the country, states such as Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, and Enugu will see increased rainfall activity, especially during the later part of each day.

NiMet warned that areas like Ebonyi and Cross River may experience moderate to heavy rainfall, raising concerns over possible flooding and disruption to daily life.

‎As part of its safety advisory, NiMet urged Nigerians to avoid driving through floodwaters, secure loose objects that may be blown away by strong winds, and disconnect electrical appliances during storms to reduce the risk of electrical hazards.

Vulnerable groups are also advised to keep warm due to low night-time temperatures.

‎The agency specifically advised airline operators to obtain flight weather information from NiMet’s offices to ensure safety and proper planning.

‎Residents are encouraged to stay updated through NiMet’s official website www.nimet.gov.ng and heed all safety advisories issued during this period of unstable weather.

‎Radio Nigeria will continue to provide timely weather updates to keep the public informed.
