The House of Representatives has asked one of its members, Hon. Ibrahim Usman Auyo, to provide proof of his claim that lawmakers pay money before presenting motions, bills, or petitions on the floor of the Green Chamber.
Hon. Auyo, who represents Hadejia/Auyo/Kafin Hausa Federal Constituency of Jigawa State under the All Progressives Congress (APC), was captured in a viral video alleging that legislators pay as much as three million naira to sponsor legislative proposals.
In the footage, the lawmaker, who has faced criticism from his constituents for sponsoring few motions and bills since his election in 2015, claimed that presenting a bill or petition requires payment and further lobbying of colleagues.
Reacting to the allegations, House spokesperson, Hon. Akin Rotimi, described the claims as unsubstantiated and capable of eroding public trust in the legislature if left unchecked.
He explained that the National Assembly operates through laid down constitutional procedures, House Standing Orders, and parliamentary ethics, stressing that there is no room for bribery or inducement in sponsoring motions or bills.
According to him, Hon. Auyo will be required to defend his statement before the House when it reconvenes. If unable ‘to provide verifiable evidence, the matter will be referred to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges for necessary action.”
Rotimi reiterated that the House remains committed to transparency, accountability, and protecting the integrity of the parliament.
