Rising Heat, Thunderstorms Expected Nationwide as NiMet Warns Residents

Residents of Lagos State have been advised to prepare for rising temperatures and unstable weather conditions over the next three days, from Wednesday, February 4, to Friday, February 6, as increased heat, thunderstorms, and light rainfall are forecast.

The warning is contained in a weather bulletin issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which projects similar conditions across several parts of the country.

According to NiMet’s latest three-day outlook released by its Central Forecast Office, Lagos is among southern states expected to experience enhanced cloudiness, sunny intervals, and recurring thunderstorms during the forecast period.

On Wednesday, Lagos is expected to witness cloudy conditions with sunny spells, alongside thunderstorms and light rainfall, particularly in the morning hours.

Additional thunderstorms are forecast for the afternoon and evening, raising concerns for commuters and residents in flood-prone areas.

For Thursday, NiMet predicts sunny skies with patches of clouds across Lagos, while isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall are expected later in the afternoon and evening.

By Friday, weather conditions are projected to remain unstable, with increased cloudiness, intervals of sunshine, and the likelihood of isolated thunderstorms and light rain across the state.

NiMet also noted that the northern region of the country will experience predominantly sunny and dry conditions throughout the forecast period.

In the North-Central region, sunny conditions with patches of clouds are expected, with chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of Benue State, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

Across the southern region, enhanced cloudiness with sunny intervals is anticipated.

Thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected over parts of Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Abia, Anambra, and Ekiti states, mainly during the afternoon and evening periods.

NiMet further warned that temperatures are expected to rise nationwide, which could result in thermal discomfort.

The agency advised members of the public to stay well hydrated, wear light and breathable clothing, and remain in well-ventilated environments.

It also cautioned that dust particles are currently in suspension, posing potential health risks to people with asthma and other respiratory conditions.

Motorists were advised to drive cautiously during rainfall, while airline operators and residents were urged to stay updated through official NiMet weather bulletins to minimise weather-related risks across the country.
