Sam Okwaraji U-16 Championship Launched to Boost Youth Football

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, says the Federal Government will continue to immortalise sports icons who contributed significantly to Nigeria’s development.

He made this known during the unveiling of the Samuel Okwaraji U-16 Secondary School Football Championship at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

Olopade described Okwaraji’s legacy as a lasting source of inspiration, noting that the championship is designed not only to honour his memory but also to nurture young football talents across the country.

He recalled witnessing Okwaraji’s tragic death at the same stadium in 1989, adding that the initiative highlights the role of sports in youth development and economic growth.

Also speaking, the Director General of the National Institute for Sports, Philip Shaibu, urged young athletes to emulate Okwaraji’s discipline and academic excellence. He disclosed that a new sports curriculum, approved by the National Board for Technical Education and awaiting clearance from the National Universities Commission, aims to equip athletes with life skills and certifications.

The tournament, supported by the Nigeria Football Federation and other key institutions, will be held across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, with top teams progressing to a grand finale in Abuja.

Organisers said strict measures would be implemented to prevent age falsification and ensure fairness throughout the competition.

Corporate partner First Bank of Nigeria has pledged support, including kits, logistics, accommodation and medical services, describing the initiative as a long-term investment in grassroots sports.

The championship will kick off with state-level preliminaries on May 16, 2026, with 12 teams expected to qualify for the final stage in Abuja.
