Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional centres across Lagos State as part of efforts to ease congestion and strengthen the criminal justice system.
The decision follows a similar exercise in December 2025 when 91 inmates were released, highlighting the government’s continued intervention to address overcrowding in custodial facilities.
According to the Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, the inmates were granted freedom under the prerogative of mercy in line with Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
He said the beneficiaries were recommended by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy after due consideration of established legal processes.
The state government said the move reflects its commitment to justice, fairness and the rule of law, while also improving conditions in correctional centres and enabling faster trial processes.
As part of wider reforms, the government has provided additional transport support for inmate movement to courts and is upgrading correctional facilities to improve infrastructure and welfare.
Lagos State also called on the Federal Government to transfer control of at least one correctional centre to the state, noting that many inmates are held for offences under state laws.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to reforms that balance public safety, rehabilitation and the protection of fundamental human rights.
