Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday presented compensation cheques worth N3.1 billion to 331 Project Affected Persons (PAPs) whose lands and properties were acquired for strategic public infrastructure projects across the state, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fairness, justice and responsible governance.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, the governor described the compensation exercise as the fulfilment of a legal and moral obligation rather than an act of charity.
According to him, development must always be pursued with consideration for the people directly affected by government projects.
“Today we have gathered not merely to present compensation cheques, but to reaffirm a principle that lies at the heart of responsible governance: that development must always have a human face. Behind every development corridor is a community. Behind every parcel of land is a story, and behind every acquisition are individuals whose lives are directly touched by the decisions of government,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the compensation was paid in line with Sections 28 and 29 of the Land Use Act, which empower government to acquire land for overriding public interest while mandating fair compensation for affected property owners.
“When the State exercises its powers under the Land Use Act, it takes on a solemn obligation to compensate those affected fairly, transparently and promptly. Today’s ceremony is the fulfilment of that obligation. It is not charity; it is justice. It is not a favour; it is your right,” the governor stated.
He disclosed that the beneficiaries were affected by land acquisitions undertaken for strategic road and infrastructure projects designed to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, facilitate commerce and stimulate economic growth across Lagos.
According to the governor, every claim underwent a rigorous verification process involving enumeration, valuation by professional estate surveyors and confirmation of title ownership to ensure that compensation reached the rightful beneficiaries.
“These projects are strategic investments in the future of Lagos. While infrastructure may benefit millions, we recognise that its immediate impact is often borne by a few. To every Project Affected Person represented here today, your sacrifice is acknowledged, your contribution is appreciated, and your partnership in the development of Lagos State will never be taken for granted,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu urged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds by investing in ventures that would secure the future of their families and communities.
He advised them against squandering the compensation on frivolous activities, stressing that the money should serve as a foundation for long-term economic stability.
The governor also assured those whose compensation claims were still being processed that no legitimate claimant would be left out.
“To those whose compensation is yet to be processed, I assure you that your turn will come in due course. No valid claim will be abandoned. We appreciate your patience as the process continues in accordance with established procedures,” he said.
He warned individuals attempting to manipulate the process through fraudulent claims that government would not hesitate to expose and sanction impostors.
The governor also announced that funds had been approved for the construction of a permanent National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp at Agbowa, adding that compensation for affected property owners would be paid before the end of the year.
Sanwo-Olu said the compensation exercise reflects his administration’s broader commitment to building public trust, strengthening institutions and ensuring that development projects are implemented with fairness and transparency.
“We are not simply acquiring land to build infrastructure; we are building trust and laying the foundation for the Lagos of tomorrow. Together, we shall continue to build a Greater Lagos that works for everyone,” he said.
In a goodwill message, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat urged beneficiaries to remain active participants in the democratic process by registering with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards and supporting good governance.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Lands Bureau, Mr. Kamar Olowosago, commended the beneficiaries for their patience and cooperation, noting that the lands surrendered for development would continue to serve millions of residents for generations.
He said their sacrifice would remain an important part of Lagos State’s development history.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom, Oba Semiudeen Orimadegun Kasali, expressed appreciation to the state government for fulfilling compensation commitments dating back to 2016.
The monarch described the payment as a significant milestone, especially as it coincided with activities marking his tenth anniversary on the throne, and thanked affected landowners for their contributions to the growth and development of Lagos State.
