Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the development of Badagry, announcing that construction of the long-awaited Badagry Central Palace will commence immediately.
The Governor made the disclosure during a visit to the historic town as the nine-day traditional rites marking the passage of the Akran of Badagry, De-Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, came to an end.
Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the palace project, which had experienced delays due to unforeseen challenges, has now been fully resolved following the allocation of a dedicated site.
He revealed that all necessary budgetary approvals have been secured and that mobilisation to site will begin without delay.
Describing the project as a critical step toward preserving Badagry’s cultural heritage, the Governor said the palace would strengthen traditional institutions while also boosting tourism in the ancient city.
According to him, the palace will serve as a symbol of identity, unity and continuity for the people of Badagry, while reinforcing the town’s historical and cultural significance within Lagos State.
Governor Sanwo-Olu further assured residents that his administration remains committed to delivering more developmental projects across Badagry, in recognition of its strategic importance to the state.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of Badagry Local Government and host of the event, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, described the late monarch as a custodian of Badagry’s rich heritage and a bridge between tradition and modern governance.
Mr. Hunpe noted that under the reign of De-Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, Badagry remained a land of peace, dialogue and unity, irrespective of political, religious or social differences.
