Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has formally endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement was made on Monday at Lagos House, Marina, following a closed-door meeting between the governor, members of the state executive council, and Dr Hamzat, who had earlier visited to formally declare his intention to contest.
The meeting was attended by key political figures, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), as well as former minister Musiliu Obanikoro and past senator Ganiyu Solomon, among others.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as a capable and well-prepared leader, citing his experience and performance as deputy governor over the past seven years.
According to him, the endorsement was unanimous among stakeholders present, noting that Hamzat possesses the integrity, loyalty, and leadership capacity required to govern the state.
“We have just received the Deputy Governor, who came with a strong delegation of leaders across the state to formally inform us of his intention to contest. It was a unanimous position that he is fit and well-prepared for the job,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu added that Hamzat’s deep understanding of governance and his close working relationship with the administration have positioned him as a natural successor.
He further expressed personal pride in the deputy governor’s decision to run, describing him as a tested and trusted partner who has demonstrated commitment to the growth and development of Lagos State.
The governor urged Lagosians to support Hamzat’s ambition, saying he has been “built for the job” and deserves the opportunity to lead the state.
