Sanwo-Olu pledges support to farmers as Lagos marks World Food Day

The Lagos State Government today marked the 2023 World Food Day with the Theme: “Water Is Life, Water Is Food, Leave No One Behind.”

Speaking at the event held at the Police College, Ikeja, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu pledged his administration’s commitment to a more secure, stable Food Supply chain and sustainability to address the emerging threats of Food insecurity and wastages.

According to him, efforts will be intensified to deliver the Lagos State Food Processing hub in Epe, which will be the largest in West Africa, before the end of next year.

Earlier, Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms Abisola Olusanya, noted that this year’s Celebration is coming up amid serious food security issues occasioned by the effect of the unstable exchange rate, climate change, environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, insurgency, especially in the nation’s food production regions, and violent conflicts across the world.

According to Ms. Olusanya, this year’s Theme aims to highlight the critical role of water for life on earth and water as the foundation of food and to raise awareness about the importance of managing water wisely as rapid population growth, economic development, urbanization, and climatic change threaten water availability.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, alongside some members of his cabinet, inspected some food stands where vendors and farmers displayed their produce as part of activities marking the day.

World Food Day is marked annually on October 16 to encourage actions on food insecurity as it coincides with the day the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization was founded in 1945 to combat food insecurity.
