Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has signed the 2026 Appropriation Bill, tagged the “Budget of Shared Prosperity,” into law, even as he issued strong warnings against dangerous fuel scooping, indiscriminate waste disposal and other acts of indiscipline in the state.
The budget signing took place on Monday, January 19, 2026, eleven days after the Lagos State House of Assembly approved an upward review of the budget size to about ₦4.4 trillion, from the ₦4.2 trillion initially presented by the Governor in December 2025.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the 2026 budget represents the last full year of budget implementation under his administration, expressing optimism that Lagos residents would be the greatest beneficiaries of the spending plan.
He commended the Speaker of the House, Chief Mudashiru Obasa, and other lawmakers for their diligence and cooperation, stressing that harmonious collaboration between the executive and legislative arms remains critical to good governance in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the Speaker, Mr. Naheem Adams praised the Governor’s people-oriented policies, noting that the budget was thoroughly scrutinised by lawmakers and reflects current economic realities, with a focus on improving the welfare of Lagosians.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Ope George, explained that the Budget of Shared Prosperity was designed to accelerate economic growth, deepen infrastructure development, improve transportation systems and sustain fiscal responsibility across the state.
He also disclosed that the 2025 budget performance stood at 81 per cent as of September 2025, underscoring the administration’s commitment to effective budget execution.
Meanwhile, Governor Sanwo-Olu used the occasion to express disappointment over the dangerous scooping of spilled fuel by some residents on the Liverpool Bridge, Apapa, describing the act as a suicide mission.
He commended the swift intervention of first responders and the police, whose actions prevented what could have resulted in loss of lives, and warned residents to desist from such life-threatening behaviour.
The Governor also spoke strongly against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, particularly on road medians, announcing that stiffer penalties will be enforced in the year. He said the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has been directed to arrest offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.
On the recent demolition at the Makoko waterfront, Sanwo-Olu clarified that evacuation notices had been served for over two years to residents living within 150 to 250 metres of high-tension power lines. He assured that, as a compassionate government, affected residents would be provided with palliatives and relocation grants.
The Governor stressed that his administration would leave no stone unturned in ensuring the safety of lives and property of all Lagos residents.
