The Lagos State Government has launched the domestication of the National Women’s Economic Empowerment, WEE, Policy Roadmap in a major step toward bridging gender inequality.
The roadmap provides a comprehensive framework to address structural barriers to women’s economic inclusion and aligns with the global Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, particularly Goal 5 on gender equality.
Speaking at the official launch held on Lagos Island, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated that the policy would promote multi-sectoral partnerships and policy-driven strategies to unlock the full economic potential of women in Lagos.
“The roadmap is a blueprint for dismantling barriers that hinder women’s economic participation and for building inclusive prosperity,” the Governor said.
Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Grace Abraham, who represented the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, called on Lagos to support constitutional amendments that would create special seats for women in government. She described the current 4.3 percent female representation at the national level as unacceptable.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Cecilia Dada, highlighted the challenges women continue to face in education, skill acquisition, and access to traditional and emerging labour markets, including agriculture.
She said the roadmap would emphasize financial literacy, bridge digital divides, and promote gender-responsive governance backed by data and innovation.
The event also saw the inauguration of 40 Lagos WEE Policy Champions—individuals drawn from both the public and private sectors—who are tasked with driving the roadmap’s implementation across all tiers of society.
The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to inclusive economic growth and grassroots development across the state.
