The Lagos State Government has urged people, especially women experiencing violation of their rights to speak out as they can only receive help when they do so.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Cecilia Dada gave the advice at a ministerial news conference on Tuesday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre Alausa, Ikeja.
“Speak up, speak out on domestic violence, there’s help! Come to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. If you cannot come, call 767. 767 is a number to call if you need help,” Dada said.
She said, “A woman whose rights are being violated is because she cannot take care of herself and her children.
The Commissioner advised women in Lagos State to get empowered by learning a skill.
“Don’t turn a housewife sitting at home, doing nothing. There are a lot of skills you can learn and begin to make money from the house.”
The Commissioner further revealed that the Ministry, from 2019 to date has had 16,900 graduands from the 20 skill acquisition centres in the state and has empowered 10,385 indigents and vulnerable women.
“16,900 students have graduated from the 20 Skill Acquisition Centers in Lagos State. These Centers are spread across (5) five division of the state, as a responsible government, we will continue to sustain these empowerment programmes in line with the mandate given to us as a Ministry.
“The Ministry has empowered a total number of 10,385 indigents and vulnerable women through this initiative across the State and also ensured that most of the families of the slain heroes of the Nigerian Legion were captured in our empowerment programme,” she said.
