Stakeholders Demand Stronger Measures to Protect Female Journalists in Africa

Stakeholders are pushing for stronger interventions to tackle the increasing cases of harassment, violence and impunity against female journalists across Africa. Their call followed a three-day training on Monitoring and Reporting on the Safety of Journalists in Africa, held in Entebbe, Uganda. The workshop, organised by the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) with support from UNESCO, brought together journalists, law enforcement officers and legal experts to assess safety challenges confronting women in the media industry.UNESCO’s Communication and Information Advisor for Africa, Misako Ito, said the safety of journalists—and the fight against impunity—remains crucial to protecting press freedom. She revealed that recent data shows about 73 percent of female journalists have been targeted in attacks, exposing them to disproportionate safety risks compared to their male counterparts.Chairperson of IAWRT Kenya, Josephine Karani, noted that threats against journalists should alarm all stakeholders. She called for stronger collaboration at both local and continental levels and highlighted IAWRT Kenya’s online platform that maps threats and violence against female journalists across Africa as part of its effort to promote safer work environments. In his contribution, the FCT Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Olusola Odumosu, urged security agencies across the continent to adopt more responsive strategies to protect women journalists. He explained that the NSCDC, in partnership with other security bodies in Nigeria, has established gender desks and trained officers to respond to gender-based violence as part of efforts to curb attacks on citizens, including journalists. The three-day workshop underscored the importance of sustained collaboration among media practitioners, civil society groups and security institutions to defend the rights and safety of female journalists throughout Africa.
