President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, on their stunning victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, where they claimed their seventh continental title and fifth consecutive trophy.
The Coach Rena Wakama-led team defeated Mali 78-64 in a thrilling final on Sunday night at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, solidifying their dominance in African women’s basketball.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the team’s exceptional display of skill, resilience, determination, and teamwork, noting that their performance has brought immense pride to the nation.
“Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud. Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies,” the statement read.
“You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit, the power of unity, and the rewards of hard work. By winning the AfroBasket trophy for a record fifth consecutive time, you have written your names in history and shown the world what to expect out of Africa.”
President Tinubu also commended Head Coach Rena Wakama and her technical team for their strategic brilliance, as well as the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for its unwavering support to the team.
He assured the players of the Federal Government’s continued support as they gear up for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments next March.
“The government and the people of Nigeria celebrate you and remain grateful for your sacrifices and highly elevating performances,” the President stated.
President Tinubu concluded by expressing his eagerness to host the victorious D’Tigress and their trophy in Abuja, while wishing the team a safe return home.
