President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renewal of the appointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for another five-year term.
Marwa, who first assumed the leadership of the NDLEA in January 2021 following his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now continue to head the agency until 2031.
Before taking up the NDLEA role, Marwa served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACEDA) from 2018 to December 2020.
A distinguished retired military officer and administrator from Adamawa State, Marwa previously served as military governor of Lagos and Borno States.
He is an alumnus of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1973, Marwa’s military career includes notable assignments such as Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to the then Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, and Academic Registrar of the NDA.
He also represented Nigeria abroad as Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC, and later as Defence Adviser at the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations.
Marwa holds two advanced degrees: a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh (1983–1985) and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University (1985–1986).
His reappointment is expected to ensure continuity in Nigeria’s intensified fight against drug trafficking and abuse.
