President Bola Tinubu has renamed the renovated National Theatre, Lagos, after Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, describing him as a global icon of literature, creativity, and human rights.
The president made the announcement during the theatre’s official inauguration, part of Nigeria’s 65th Independence celebrations.
Tinubu said the rebirth of the 1976 edifice would boost arts, culture, and the creative economy, while urging Nigerians to speak positively about the country.
He called on the theatre’s managers to generate jobs, maintain the facility, and preserve it as a tribute to Soyinka’s enduring legacy.
Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also praised the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria for their roles in reviving the landmark after years of neglect.
