Tinubu to Nigerians @ 65 : “The Worst Is Over, Brighter Days Ahead”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the worst is over and that the country is on the path to recovery and renewed hope.

‎In his third Independence Anniversary address since assuming office in May 2023, the President reflected on Nigeria’s 65 years of nationhood, recalling the sacrifices of the founding fathers who secured independence from colonial rule on October 1, 1960.

‎The President paid glowing tributes to nationalists such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and Margaret Ekpo, among others, noting that their vision of a united and prosperous Nigeria remains a guiding light.

‎He acknowledged that the country has faced turbulent moments, including a civil war, decades of military rule, and political instability, but stressed that Nigeria has continued to endure and grow stronger. The Presidential broadcast reads in parts-

‎“Fellow compatriots, we have weathered every storm and overcome every challenge with courage, grit, and uncommon determination. We continue to strive towards a more perfect union where every Nigerian can find purpose and fulfilment,” President Tinubu declared.

ECONOMIC REFORMS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

‎The President highlighted bold reforms his administration embarked upon in the past 28 months, including the removal of fuel subsidy and unification of exchange rates, which he said were necessary sacrifices to reset the economy.

‎According to him, Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product grew by 4.23 percent in the second quarter of 2025, its fastest pace in four years, while inflation dropped to 20.12 percent, the lowest level in three years.

‎He listed 12 key economic milestones achieved under his administration:

‎Record increase in non-oil revenue with over N20 trillion raised in 2025.

‎Reduction of debt service-to-revenue ratio from 97% to below 50%.

‎Foreign reserves rising to $42.03 billion, the highest since 2019.

‎Significant increase in trade surplus and diversification into non-oil exports.

‎Rebound in oil production to 1.68 million barrels per day.

‎Stabilisation of the Naira following foreign exchange reforms.

‎Over N330 billion disbursed to poor households under social investment programmes.

‎Revitalisation of the solid minerals sector, with coal mining growing by 57.5%.

‎Expansion of transport infrastructure, including rail, highways, and seaports.

‎Positive global credit ratings and stock market growth.

‎Interest rate cuts by the Central Bank for the first time in five years.

‎“The seeds of those difficult but necessary decisions are bearing fruit. Yesterday’s pains are giving way to relief. The worst is over,” Tinubu assured.

SECURITY
‎On security, the President praised the gallantry of Nigeria’s armed forces and security agencies for their sacrifices in the battle against terrorism, banditry, and violent crimes.

‎He noted that Boko Haram and IPOB/ESN insurgencies were being pushed back, and peace had returned to many communities in the North-East and North-West, where thousands of displaced persons are returning to their homes.

YOUTH AND DEVELOPMENT
‎President Tinubu also directed his message to Nigerian youths, describing them as the country’s greatest assets.

‎He listed several initiatives tailored to support young people, including:

‎The Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which has disbursed nearly N100 billion to over 500,000 students.

‎Credicorp loans, which have provided over N30 billion in affordable credit for digital devices, solar energy, and home upgrades.

‎YouthCred programme, already benefiting NYSC members.

‎The iDICE project, aimed at empowering innovators in digital and creative industries.

‎“You must continue to dream big, innovate, and conquer new frontiers. This administration will continue to give you wings to fly,” Tinubu pledged.

MESSAGE OF HOPE
‎While acknowledging that Nigerians are still grappling with high living costs, the President insisted that reforms were essential to prevent economic collapse.

‎“The true measure of our success is not just in economic figures but in the food on our tables, the quality of education, the power in our homes, and the security in our communities,” he stressed.

‎He called on state governments, local authorities, and citizens to join hands in building a productive, self-reliant nation.

‎“Let us patronise Made-in-Nigeria goods. Let us farm our land and build factories to process our produce. I say Nigeria first,” he declared.

‎President Tinubu concluded his address with a message of hope:
‎“With Almighty God on our side, I can assure you that the dawn of a new, prosperous, and self-reliant Nigeria is here. Happy 65th Independence Anniversary, and may God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
