The city of Kano has been thrown into mourning following the death of Hafsatu Yusuf, who passed away hours after giving birth to quintuplets at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
The woman reportedly delivered five babies—three boys and two girls—on Wednesday in what was initially celebrated as a rare and remarkable medical achievement.
However, her condition deteriorated shortly after childbirth.Medical sources confirmed that she died less than 24 hours later due to severe postpartum bleeding, despite efforts by doctors to stabilize her.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry of Health, Nabulisi Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that the medical team did everything possible to save her life.
He, however, reassured the public that the quintuplets are in stable condition and responding well to intensive medical care.
“The Kano State Government has taken full responsibility for the babies’ welfare and will ensure they receive the necessary medical attention and support,” he said.
The tragic development has drawn sympathy from across the state, with family members and relatives gathering at the hospital in grief as news of the loss spread.
Authorities say further details will be made available following ongoing medical reviews, while the state government has called for prayers for the bereaved family and pledged continued support for the newborns.
