The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator (UNRH) in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, has called for stronger protection of civilians, civilian spaces, and schools following a wave of violent attacks in Niger State and neighbouring areas.
In a statement, Fall disclosed that on January 3, more than 30 people were reportedly killed and several others abducted after armed assailants attacked a village market in Kasuwan Daji, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
He said the attackers also set market stalls and nearby homes ablaze.
He further noted that similar attacks were reported in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, as well as parts of Kwara and Ondo States, resulting in numerous casualties, including deaths and kidnappings.
According to the UN official, Agwara LGA was also the scene of a major incident in November 2025, when over 300 people were abducted during an attack on Saint Mary’s Catholic School.
The victims were later released.“These attacks constitute grave violations of human rights, including the right to life and the protection of civilians, particularly women and children, and they undermine the right to education,” Fall said.
Speaking on behalf of the United Nations, he extended condolences to families who lost loved ones and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He also called for the immediate release of all abducted persons and urged authorities to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice in line with national and international human rights standards.
Fall stressed that students, schools, and education personnel must be protected from all forms of attack, noting that no child should be endangered while pursuing education, which is a fundamental right.
He recalled that in November 2025, the United Nations reiterated the need for Nigeria to fully implement the Safe Schools Declaration to preserve the civilian nature of schools and guarantee safe learning environments, even in situations of conflict and insecurity.
The UN coordinator said the recent attacks highlight the urgent need for decisive action and reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to working with government authorities to strengthen civilian protection and promote safer learning spaces across the country.
