UNILAG Professor Explains the Science Behind ‘Switch Off Your Phone’ Rule

Navigation and Communication scientist, University of Lagos, Prof. Andrew Akala says, the aviation industry’s restriction on switching off phones during flight is primarily due to signal interference, which can compromise safety.

According to him, the International Aviation Organization, in conjunction with the International Telecommunications Union, has implemented this regulation to prevent potential interference with aircraft instrumentation and communication systems.

In an interview with our aviation Correspondent Nosa Aituamen, prof. Akala said, while putting a phone on flight mode may not cause interference, compliance is a concern, as passengers may switch their phones back on without being monitored.

He advises switching off phones during all phases of flight, particularly during takeoff and landing, when pilots are busy with critical procedures.

The professor explained that signal interference can cause jamming, leading to signal degradation, which can have serious safety implications.

He cited the example of the US operation in Afghanistan, where they used technology to cut off signals in the airspace, resulting in the control tower being unable to communicate with aircraft.

Professor Akala noted that the regulation applies not only to phones but also to all electronic devices that emit frequencies, as they can potentially interfere with aircraft systems.

He emphasized that safety is paramount in aviation and that signal interference is a critical issue that should not be taken lightly.

The professor also addressed the difference in regulations between domestic and international flights, explaining that during international flights, passengers are often allowed to use their devices in flight mode when the aircraft is at a stable altitude.

However, in Nigeria, the regulatory agency, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has mandated a total switch-off of devices during domestic flights to ensure compliance and safety.

Prof. Akala stressed that safety is non-negotiable in aviation, and the regulation on switching off phones and electronic devices is in place to protect passengers and prevent potential disasters.

He encouraged Nigerians to be aware of the importance of this regulation and to cooperate with the NCAA’s efforts to ensure safe air travel.
