The Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has charged market leaders in the State, to ensure proper sanitation and security of the markets.
At a one day seminar on market sanitation and security for market leaders and stakeholders in the Badagry Division held at the Iba Local Council Secretariat, Dr. Sanwo-Olu who was represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, said health and the environment is part of the THEMES Agenda and the current administration is passionate about ensuring the well-being of all residents.
“We know that a lot of waste is generated from our environment, so for a sustainable management of the environment, it is important that we seize this opportunity to appeal to our market women and women to desist from unhygienic practices that would lead to the blocking of drainages, street trading amongst others” she said.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Dr. Wale Ahmed, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Kikelomo Sanyaolu, urged market leaders and stakeholders to continuously commit themselves to ensuring security in their markets by being vigilant and thought prompt reporting of suspicious acts and movements to the appropriate authorities.
“In Lagos, we have the intention of making out markets models for other markets not only in Nigeria,but across West Africa, hence the need, to continually implored our market leaders, men and women to continue to adhere to regulations and standards” the Commissioner said.
The seminar which is 4th in the series, was put together by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, as part of efforts to put the welfare, safety and security of market men and women, on the front burner.
