World Ocean Day: IOI-Nigeria Rallies Nation Against Plastic Pollution

As Nigeria prepares to mark World Ocean Day 2025, the International Ocean Institute–Nigeria (IOI-Nigeria) is leading a renewed call for urgent action against plastic pollution, which experts say is endangering marine ecosystems, coastal communities, and public health.

This year’s theme, “Wonders: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” underscores the need for global and local efforts to protect the ocean.

In partnership with the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) and the UN Information Center (UNIC), Abuja, IOI-Nigeria will host its main event on Tuesday, June 10, due to the official date (June 8) falling on a weekend.

IOI-Nigeria Director, Akanbi Williams, described plastic pollution as a “ticking time bomb,” urging collective national action.

“Our oceans are choking on plastic… We must act now — collectively — to protect our oceans and secure the future of our coastal communities,” Williams said.

Williams emphasized that protecting the ocean is tied to Nigeria’s food security, climate, economy, and public health.

“This is not just about the ocean — it’s about our survival,” he said. “The time for bold, united action is now.”
