Residents of Yaba Council Development Area, LCDA, of Lagos State have been cautioned against Indiscriminate dumping of waste on road median and in drainage channel to prevent flood and other environmental challenges or risk jail term or a fine of fifty thousand naira or both
Chairman Yaba LCDA, Dr Bayo Adefuye, gave the warning while fielding questions from newsmen in his office at Yaba Council Secretariat.
Dr Adefuye attributed the many challenges during rainy season to dumping of plastic waste in water canal, saying his administration will leave no stone unturned in ensuring aggressive sensitization and awareness on behavioral changes.
He noted that government alone cannot handle environmental challenges if residents are not willing to change.
“And also, we are also trying to ensure that we get to be part of this e-registration process as well.
Because a lot of them have been discouraged and we would like them to know that the government cares about them”
While speaking on his administration’s plan for the new year, Dr Adefuye said the fourteen billion naira budget of new beginning tagged Yaba Tuntun, would bring more development to the LCDA.
He promised to focus more on youth empowerment, Energy solutions, provision of mini transport systems, road infrastructure and improved primary healthcare services among others.
Dr Adefuye urged residents to take advantage of the ongoing All Progressive Congress APC e-registration to validate their membership to ensure they are not disenfranchised during the 2027 general election with a promise to make the process seamless for all interested members of Yaba LCDA.
While reacting to the demolition exercise at the Makoko area of his LCDA, the Council Boss said the Lagos State government has sent relocation notices to the affected residents noting that building structures under high tension wires are risky and a suicide mission.
“People are not supposed to live in the power lines.
It’s very dangerous to live under those power lines.
It causes all manner of illness, ailments.
And I’m also aware that they’ve told the government that they need to relocate away from the power lines.
But all is the same, we are doing what we can as a local government to try and alleviate.
We’re trying to get food palliatives to them and some words of encouragement” he said.
“So we intend to reach out to all of them. We also intend to make sure that their numbers are accounted for.
See what, but I know there’s some kind of, I’m sure, bigger city governments who are not sleeping on their mat as well” Adefuye stated
“Electromagnetic this causes cancers it causes a man of tumors and it will be over time and then when people start dying they will say his evil spirit or their village people not knowing that it’s just where you are located that’s the problem so i do really also with them on that but at the same time we will try to see what possible like the food pilot like how many of them are you trying to get across”
However, Dr Adefuye said respite will soon come the way of displaced residents of Makoko as he promised to disburse financial support and food palliative to them to cushion the effects.
