Passengers Must Declare Cash Over $10,000, NCAA reminds Airlines

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has sent a reminder to all international airlines operating flights into the country, urging strict compliance with the nation’s currency declaration requirements for inbound passengers.

This renewed call comes amid Nigeria’s heightened efforts to align its financial control systems with global standards.

This is particularly in strengthening its Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) framework.

In a notice to foreign carriers, the NCAA emphasized that airlines must ensure that all inbound passengers are informed, either through in-flight or pre-landing announcements, about their legal obligation to declare any cash or bearer negotiable instruments exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent upon arrival in Nigeria.

The authority also restated that airlines are required to distribute currency declaration forms to passengers before landing.

According to the NCAA, reports received by them suggest that some international airlines have yet to fully comply with this directive.

The NCAA stressed that the cooperation of all international operators is essential to Nigeria’s commitment to financial transparency and global best practices.

It warned that compliance will be closely monitored and that any airline found violating the directive will face appropriate sanctions.
