The use of substandard iron rods at construction sites has been identified as a major cause of recurring building collapses in Lagos State.
This was the view of callers on Radio One’s audience participation programme, Agbeyewo on Nje Eti Gbo, as they reacted to the most recent collapse in the state and ways to prevent future tragedies.
One caller, Mr. Ademola from Iyana Ipaja, expressed shock that buildings still collapse despite enforcement agencies marking unsafe structures across Lagos.
A building supervisor, Mr. Oluomo from Ikorodu, explained that using 10mm rods in place of 12mm, or substituting two rods with one, weakens structures and often leads to collapse or irreparable damage.
Another contributor suggested that engineers and artisans involved in such projects should be held accountable, alleging that some cases may even amount to sabotage against property owners.
Callers collectively urged stricter monitoring and enforcement of building code regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
