A strategic partnership between Radio Nigeria and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is set to strengthen emergency awareness, fire safety education, and public protection across Lagos.

This development followed a high-level courtesy visit by the Director of Lagos Operations, Princess Adenike Adegoke, and her management team to the fire service headquarters, signaling a renewed commitment to collaborative public safety communication.
The delegation was received on behalf of the Controller General, Margaret Adeseye, by Deputy Controller General Olajide Ogabi, who described the engagement as timely and critical for advancing public enlightenment and institutional synergy.

Ogabi highlighted the agency’s operational growth, noting a significant expansion in infrastructure and response capacity.
Fire stations across Lagos have increased from 11 in 2019 to 25, with additional facilities underway.
The state government has also deployed over 60 firefighting vehicles and strengthened personnel capacity to improve emergency response efficiency.
He reaffirmed the agency’s core responsibilities—fire suppression, rescue operations, fire prevention, and humanitarian services emphasizing that strategic stationing across key locations enables rapid response to emergencies.
According to Ogabi, the service responds to an average of seven to thirteen fire incidents daily, with numbers rising to about twenty during peak periods.
He stressed that many of these incidents are preventable, often linked to negligence, unsafe handling of equipment, and poor compliance with safety regulations.
Common causes of fire outbreaks, he noted, include electrical faults, improper storage of flammable materials, unsafe use of gas cylinders, and deliberate acts.
He underscored the importance of adherence to safety standards and the role of continuous public education in reducing fire risks.
Addressing past operational challenges, particularly water supply constraints, Ogabi revealed that recent investments in tanker systems and hydrant infrastructure have significantly enhanced firefighting efficiency.
He also pointed to improved emergency coordination through toll-free lines and a centralized command system.
Calling for deeper media collaboration, he emphasized that consistent and strategic communication is essential for influencing public behavior and preventing avoidable disasters.

In her remarks, Princess Adegoke commended the Lagos State Government and the fire service for their progress in protecting lives and property.
She described firefighting as a high-risk but essential service that requires greater visibility and public recognition.
She highlighted the extensive reach of Radio Nigeria Lagos Operations, which runs three major stations—Radio One, Bond FM, and Metro FM—broadcasting across multiple languages and platforms to urban, grassroots, and digital audiences.
Adegoke explained that the partnership aims to create structured programming dedicated to fire safety education.
Regular airtime will focus on prevention strategies, emergency preparedness, and risk management, equipping residents with actionable safety knowledge.
She added that Radio Nigeria’s broad coverage across the South-West and beyond provides a powerful platform to amplify critical safety messages, ensuring they reach underserved and remote communities.
Members of the delegation also emphasized the need to improve public perception of the fire service through sustained media visibility, noting that increased awareness can drive better public cooperation during emergencies.
The visit concluded with discussions on developing targeted campaigns, including specialized programmes, jingles, and public enlightenment initiatives centered on fire prevention and safety compliance—particularly in high-risk areas such as markets and densely populated communities.
Both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to building a results-driven partnership that leverages media influence and operational expertise to reduce fire incidents, enhance emergency response outcomes, and promote a culture of safety across Lagos.
