The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has pledged to prioritise reducing pre-election litigations during his tenure.
Speaking at the 56th annual conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT) at the University of Abuja, Amupitan said adherence to party constitutions and the Electoral Act would drastically cut down such cases.
He stressed that stronger internal party democracy and early dispute resolution mechanisms were key to minimising electoral disputes, urging the National Assembly to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral legal framework to ensure credible polls.
Meanwhile, Amupitan has appointed former PUNCH Editor, Mr. Adedayo Oketola, as his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), succeeding Rotimi Oyekanmi.
Oketola, an award-winning journalist with nearly two decades of experience, previously served as News and Business Editor at The PUNCH and as Assistant Editor, News & Politics, Saturday PUNCH, for three and a half years.
